Want to See Your Books in the Bouchercon 2019 Bookroom?
Important Notice for Authors
When Bouchercon’s 50th Anniversary celebration convention arrives in Dallas, it will bring with it record attendance, stellar honorees, and fans and authors descending from all over the world.
We would like to assist our authors in preventing any disappointment involving the bookroom and/or our booksellers. Sadly, each year some authors arrive and expect they will automatically find their books for sale — because they registered as an author or are serving on a panel.
To ensure the booksellers carry your newest book, and possibly even some backlist titles, it is imperative you contact the retailers listed below this notice (coming soon).
The booksellers typically have accounts with five to ten major publishers or distributors. The books our retailers purchase from the publishers and distributors resources are returnable for credit if they don’t sell. This allows the bookseller a level of comfort they won’t have unsold books when the convention ends.
Even if you are traditionally published, you need to contact the booksellers and ensure your titles are available. For all the authors who have found exciting new ways to publish your works through alternate avenues that are not returnable, there is another way to work with booksellers to carry your titles. Ask each bookseller if they’ll take your books on consignment. This is a common route taken by many authors for selling books at conventions and store signings.
Typically, the booksellers will look for a 40-46 percent discount from the suggested or printed retail price of each title. Each author brings the books to the convention and leaves a number of them with each bookseller who take consignments. The bookseller may have you fill out paperwork to keep track of your inventory. At the end of the convention, the author returns to pick up any leftovers and get paid. Pretty simple and effective method to ensure fans can find your books for purchase. By following these few steps, we hope to assist you in having a wonderful Bouchercon experience, making new connections, and, of course, selling a lot of books!
